The Phillies, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Reds, Marlins, and Giants were separated by just four games, until Philadelphia ran away with the top spot and the thinnest of margins saw the Marlins and Diamondbacks secure their postseason future.

However, this year’s playoff picture also showcases notable absentees. The Yankees, Mets, Padres, and Cardinals, all expected contenders in 2023, have faced disappointing seasons. The Angels, who harbored playoff hopes, saw their chances dashed with the loss of Shohei Ohtani due to injury.
